Press Freedom Under Pressure: Romanian News Outlet Loses Facebook Page Without Explanation

Platform power, regulatory obligations, and the debate over digital censorship in Europe

Gândul, one of Romania’s most-read independent online newspapers, has had its Facebook page removed by Meta without receiving any explanation. The page, which held a verified status and had more than one million followers, was abruptly disabled on February 22, raising concerns about platform accountability (responsabilitate a platformei) and the limits of digital governance (guvernanță digitală) in the European media landscape.

In a strongly worded editorial, the publication described the action as “an assault on the independent publication” and “a grave attack on press freedom and on the right of the Romanian public to be informed.” The reaction reflects broader anxieties about press freedom (libertatea presei) and the role of major technology companies in shaping access to information.

Gândul has been openly critical of the annulment of the 2024 Romanian presidential elections, consistently portraying the Constitutional Court’s decision to cancel the electoral process after the first round as deeply problematic. This stance places the issue within a wider context of democratic legitimacy (legitimitate democratică) and public trust in institutions.

The newspaper, which had a blue-check verification on Facebook, accused Meta of destroying years of journalistic work “with a single click.” It also criticised the company for operating in Romania without paying local taxes and engaging in unfair competition, pointing to tensions between global platforms and national economies, as well as issues of market dominance (dominare a pieței) and economic fairness (echitate economică).

According to Gândul, the shutdown occurred without prior warning and caused an immediate and dramatic collapse in its audience reach. Within a single day, the outlet reportedly lost between 6 million and 7 million daily views and nearly 200 million monthly views across Facebook and its own website. This illustrates the dependence of modern media on social platforms and the risks associated with algorithmic distribution (distribuție algoritmică) and audience dependency (dependență de audiență).

The publication further stated that Meta only referred to a vague copyright infringement claim in private communication, without specifying the content involved or offering a meaningful opportunity for appeal. This lack of clarity highlights concerns around procedural transparency (transparență procedurală) and the need for clearer mechanisms of content moderation (moderare a conținutului) on large platforms.

Repeated attempts to restore the page through Facebook’s review system have so far failed, and Meta has not issued any public statement. There has been no mention of the case in transparency reports, nor any response to media inquiries, fuelling accusations of corporate opacity (opacitate corporativă) and reinforcing criticism about insufficient oversight.

The silence has intensified claims from Gândul that the decision represents “an attack on the independent press” and a restriction on the public’s right to information. The situation raises broader questions about the balance between private platform policies and freedom of expression (libertate de exprimare) in democratic societies.

Under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), Meta, as a Very Large Online Platform, is required to follow specific rules when restricting or removing content or accounts. These include obligations related to regulatory compliance (conformitate de reglementare) and the submission of data to the DSA Transparency Database, ensuring oversight of major platform decisions.

In response, Gândul has called on Romanian authorities and European institutions to investigate what it describes as an abuse of dominant position under both national and EU law. The appeal reflects growing reliance on institutional oversight (supraveghere instituțională) to address disputes between media organisations and technology companies.

The controversy unfolds alongside broader political tensions in Romania. President Nicușor Dan recently appointed several senior prosecutors despite negative advisory opinions from the Superior Council of the Magistracy and objections from civil society groups. Critics argue these decisions could weaken anti-corruption efforts, raising concerns about judicial independence (independență judiciară) and institutional integrity.

The president, however, has defended the appointments as professionally justified and denied any political influence. This parallel development highlights ongoing debates about governance and accountability, reinforcing the importance of rule of law (statul de drept) in maintaining democratic systems.

Together, these developments illustrate a complex intersection between media freedom, platform power, and political dynamics. The case of Gândul underscores how digital platforms have become central to the distribution of information, and how their decisions can significantly impact public discourse, media viability, and democratic participation.
